Coexisting chaotic climate attractors in a two-layer quasi-geostrophic model

چکیده

An intriguing manifestation of the underlying nonlinear fluid dynamic character of the atmosphere is found in a simple quasi-geostrophic model of the troposphere. For identical forcing and dissipation, the model’s climate is found to depend sensitively upon the choice of initial conditions, tending either toward a state resembling the current Northern Hemisphere wintertime circulation, characterized by significant mobile synoptic-scale transient disturbance activity, or a circulation characterized primarily by weak quasi-stationary (non-propagating) transient activity. Both of these dynamical states evolve chaotically, suggesting the existence of multiple underlying strange attractors for the system. The climates of these states differ substantially, with the synoptic transient dominated state having a zonal mean meridional temperature gradient 25 % smaller than that of the quasi-stationary transient dominated state. This result raises the possibility that the atmosphere may possess the ability to jump into quite different globe-encompassing states of operation.

Quasi Synchronization Phenomena in Coupled Chaotic Systems as a Ladder

Some chaotic systems have two coexisting attractors depending on initial values in same parameters. In these systems, changing parameters causes switching phenomena of coexisting attractors. In this study, we investigate switching phenomena in coupled chaotic systems as a ladder. We define a quasi synchronization and confirmed the quasi synchronization phenomena in proposed systems.

On a family of maps with multiple chaotic attractors

Multistability is characterized by the occurrence of multiple coexisting attractors. We introduce a family of maps that possess this property and in particular exhibits coexisting chaotic attractors. In this family not only the maps’ parameters can be varied but also their dimension. So, four types of multistable attractors, equilibria, periodic orbits, quasi-periodic orbits and chaotic attract...

Chaotic Interactions of Self-replicating RNA

A general system of high-order differential equations describing complex dynamics of replicating biomolecules is given. Symmetry relations and coordinate transformations of general replication systems leading to topologically equivalent systems are derived. Three chaotic attractors observed in Lotka-Volterra equations of dimension n = 3 are shown to represent three cross-sections of one and the...

Supermodeling: Combining Imperfect Models through Learning

At a dozen or so institutes around the world, comprehensive climate models are being developed and improved. Each model provides reasonable simulations of the observed climate, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. In the current multi-model ensemble approach model simulations are combined a posteriori. As an alternative, [1] proposed to dynamically connect the models into one supermodel....

Validity of the One and One-Half Layer Quasi-GeostrophicModel and Effective Topography

We rigorously justify the so-called one and one-half layer quasi-geostrophic model from the two layer model as the ratio of the depth of the bottom layer over that of the top layer approaches infinity. The effective dynamics is given by the classical barotropic quasi-geostrophic dynamics for the bottom layer without topography, and the one layer quasi-geostrophic dynamics with the stream functi...
